Review:
I loved The Last Time I Saw You. It was so realistic and I always enjoy reading about friends and their complicated relationships.
The bond between two friends can be so strong, and Sally was one of those people who sort of consumed her friends. When Olivia and Sally were getting along, things were great. But, Olivia basically had no one else in her life but Sally (because Sally wanted it that way). Sally was always the one with the agenda, the ideas, and made all the decisions, often to Olivia's detriment. Olivia never really called her out on it or held it against Sally, because she was so busy being Sally's everything.
The Last Time I Saw You is told in present-tense and flashbacks to the beginning of Sally and Olivia's friendship. I love this kind of narrative and thought it worked so well in educating the reader as to what kind of person Sally was, and exactly what it was like to be her best friend.
Sally was an enigma to me, and her mercurial moods were baffling at times. As the story progressed I realized that there was something more than initially met the eye going on with Sally, and her behavior started to make sense to me. I enjoyed going on the journey of self-discovery with Olivia, and also how she begins to piece together the clue's to the secrets in Sally's life.
Moran does an amazing job creating the characters in this book. I was impressed at the complexity of each character, from the nuances in behavior, to speech and even the way they were dressed. Each element was a puzzle piece towards that character's make-up and I loved that attention to detail.
I was so surprised by the ending, but I absolutely loved it. I thought it was very true to the story and it was exactly what needed to happen for the well-being of all the characters.
I recommend The Last Time I Saw You to fans of contemporary fiction and fans of womens fiction. I look forward to reading more from Eleanor Moran!
