Nook vs Kindle

I've had my first-generation Nook for almost three years now and it's time to upgrade.  Christmas is coming, you know?  I am looking at the Nook Simple Touch with glowlight and the Kindle Paperwhite.

I also have an iPad, and recently read a book on it with my Kindle app.  I hated reading on that screen: my eyes fatigued and I could not sit and read for an hour like I can with my Nook.  I'm thinking that I'm going to stay with the e-ink screen since that is what I'm used to, but now I just have to decide: Kindle or Nook?

What kind of e-reader do you have?  Does reading on a traditional computer screen bother your eyes?

  1. Computer screen doesn't bother me, my laptop's is very "eye-friendly", but I LOVE LOVE my Kindle. I have a Kindle 4, but would love to get a paperwhite... Santa, are you listening? :D

  2. I have both a kindle and a nook. Honestly they are both great! I think in the long run it's which company you would rather have the device on. I think Amazon has a better advantage there. Personally, I use Amazon all the time. It's just so easy to get all my e-books there too. Everything on one charge card, and I also get more amazon gift cards then BN. It's really just which company you prefer :) Good luck!

  3. I've been reading on my iPod. It hurts if I go hours and hours and hours but overall it's not too bad. And I like having a mini screen that fits in my pocket. Good luck choosing.

  4. I went from a 1st gen nook to a fire. I have done pretty good with it, when I'm inside I usually have the brightness turned just about all the way down, it works fine for me then.

  5. I have the Kindle Keyboard, a Kindle fire, and a Nook with Glow-light. Personally for reading, I love my Kindle Keyboard the best. It is lightweight, no distractions, and since I have had it the longest, the one I am most familiar with. Even with the lighted cover (which runs off the Kindle's battery) it is not heavy so I can read for long periods, it fits well in my purse, and works well on my treadmill when I am walking.

  6. Hi, Kelli!

I have had the first generation Kindle for several years now and have enjoyed it. My husband has the first generation iPad. I like that too. I want to see color and be able to play games while watching TV plus a larger screen, so I just ordered the Kindle Fire. As it's on backorder, I can't get it before December 3rd. However, I'm delighted and cannot wait to receive it. Quite frankly, I am a big fan of Amazon because they stick behind everything they sell - no questions asked and the customer service is top notch. Unfortunately, I cannot say that about Barnes and Noble. This is another reason that I'm staying with Amazon and the Kindle.

  7. I'm on my 3rd Kindle now (I keep upgrading) and I love it. I've never had, or even used, a Nook so I can't compare the devices. I can say that Amz has better ebook deals and more Kindle freebies than BN does.

Another thing you'll want to consider is your existing ebook collection. Since you currently have a Nook, most of your ebooks are probably epub, a format not supported by Kindle. There are ways around this; it's just a matter of learning how to do it :)

Can't wait to hear which you go with!

  8. sually I just read with my phone when I read ebooks. I have been thinking of buying a Kindle though. I couldn't use Nook because it doesn't accept international shipping address, even if it was just an ebook (that's completely illogical, why would you turn away from your customers? It's not like you actually have to ship anything, just send a book to me through the Internet :/) So I would say a Kindle would be better than a Nook, plus I found that Amazon has way more sales than Nook ;)

To speak the truth, I like physical books way more than ebooks... ;P

Anyway, hope you will enjoy your new reader when you decide which to buy :)

  9. I have the Kindle Fire and The lowest priced Kindle. I have to say I really love the plain old cheap kindle. It’s lightweight, it’s sturdy and it is easier on my eyes than the Fire. It’s very portable.

  10. Which did you choose? (I love, love, love my NOOK Tablet, and Calibre lets me convert Kindle books and books from other formats into NOOK-compatible content. I also appreciate the fact that I can use a dual-boot sdcard to transform my unrooted NOOK into a full-fledged Anduroid tablet.)

  11. Kindle readers can go deeper into a book utilizing X-Ray or the new Wikipedia integration while Nook still has basic dictionary look-up.This joined with the better get to notes settles on the Paperwhite a finer decision for students. What's more despite the fact that B&n presented Nook Friends back when the Nook Color tablet turned out,the company doesn't incorporate it into its dedicated digital book reader.Amazon recently incorporated Goodreads into the Paperwhite, launching it in front of the Nook in social interaction.~Jessica Hall.
